Many US automakers are gearing up to drastically increase the number of fuel-efficient vehicles on the road in the coming years, and Ford is no exception. According to recent rumors swirling throughout the Australian blogosphere, Ford is expected to revolutionize its pickup lineup by introducing a plug-in hybrid model.
CarExpert, an Australian automotive publication, reported in
May 2020 that the upcoming next-generation Ford Ranger will likely launch for
the 2022 model year with a four-cylinder 2.3-liter plug-in hybrid engine. The
powertrain is expected to achieve an impressive fuel efficiency rating while
delivering up to 362 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque.
Unfortunately, it might be too soon to buy a tacky “My Truck
Gets Better MPG Than Your Sedan” bumper sticker. Recent rumors from the
stateside publication Car and Driverregarding
a plug-in hybrid model of the beloved Ford F-150 were retracted quickly,
suggesting that Ford might not be pursuing a more eco-conscious pickup lineup
after all. Notably, CarExpert was launched just two months before its May 2020
prediction of a 2022 Ranger PHEV, making it impossible to truly nail down the
publication’s track record.
Even if the PHEV version of the next-gen Ranger does make it to Australia, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will be available at US dealerships. However, we boast a wide variety of fuel-efficient models like the Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid alongside the rugged and capable gas-powered Ranger. Modern hybrids are often more powerful than their gasoline-only counterparts, thanks to the additional torque gained from the electric motors. This benefit is why Ford is planning to release a 2020 Ford Mustang Hybrid.
While we don’t know much about this planned Mustang hybrid, it is fun to imagine the power you could get from the combination of the 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo, a 10-speed automatic transmission, and a pair of electric motors. With this powertrain blend, we will likely see an output of at least 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.
It is possible that Ford will utilize the same hybrid technology it is planning for the next-generation Ford Focus RS. Industry reports indicate that the Focus RS Hybrid will use a 48-volt starter system that will boost its output to around 400 horsepower and cut about 0.4 seconds off of its current 0-60 mph time.
Along with its improved output, the Mustang Hybrid should see a boost in efficiency, too. While fuel economy isn’t expected to go up significantly, it should at least boast a better rating than the gasoline-only models.

Ford is making good on its promise to deliver affordable and highly capable electric vehicles (EVs) to drivers and businesses with the debut of the all-new Ford Transit Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). The impressive and efficient commercial van debuted recently at the Cenex Low Carbon Vehicle 2017 event, and businesses looking for an affordable, efficient, and clean fleet vehicle are rightfully excited.
Slated to roll out in volume in 2019, the Ford Transit PHEV features an advanced hybrid system capable of emission-free driving for up to 31+ miles. The new Transit will also be equipped with the award-winning Ford EcoBoost 1.0-liter engine to extend its driving range.
With the release of the Transit PHEV, Ford will be the only automaker to offer such technology in a commercial van. The van will offer, for the first time, unbeatable fuel-efficiency for urban-operating businesses that rely on fleet vehicles for a variety of transit needs.
The new Transit PHEV signals that Ford is ready to remain a top automaker as electric vehicles become increasingly in-demand, which is great news for drivers, as they can continue to count on unstoppable Ford performance without sacrificing cutting-edge efficiency.
